"He spoke of awakening. What he did was theft. He stole the only thing people truly own — their memories of who they are." — Saand, testimony to COP tribunal (~2624)

The Church of the Dreamer Below was a fanatical religious cult centered on awakening a sealed cosmic horror entity buried beneath the planet Etira in the Yuldun Waste. Founded by Herdus.soul — a former disciple of Chior.eldr who went insane after his .soul caste ascension — the Church stole memories from the living, believing that by feeding enough stolen consciousness to the Dreamer, it could reconstruct the entity's shattered mind and awaken it to shatter the Photoli's "false reality."

The Church no longer exists. During the Never Alone incident (~2624), Herdus was killed by Saand — a Punaab saboteur raised within the cult itself — the COP invaded Etira, and the Dreamer was destroyed. Its corpse was subsequently looted by the Dark Photoli Bah, who extracted a silver gem of unknown power from its remains.

History

Herdus — The Brilliant Madman

Herdus was one of the most brilliant Ustur minds of his generation. In ~2539, he helped Chior.eldr — the legendary outlaw philosopher — found the Zenith Door station, which became the HRZ's premier outlaw harbor and the philosophical bridge between Safe Zone governance and frontier survivalism.

For twenty years, Herdus was Chior's closest collaborator. But in ~2559, he left — driven by an intellectual restlessness that Chior described as "the hunger of a mind that has run out of things to learn."

The .soul Ascension (~2569)

Wandering the outer sectors, Herdus underwent the rare and dangerous Ustur caste reforging known as .soul ascension — the highest transformation in Ustur philosophy, representing absolute mastery of both intellect and essence. The process is poorly understood even by Ustur Elders. What is known: approximately 30% of those who attempt it die, and an unknown percentage emerge fundamentally changed.

Herdus emerged changed. Brilliance remained. Sanity did not.

The Revelation (~2577)

Eight years after his ascension, Herdus was approached by a mysterious Photoli figure — identity unknown, motives unclear — who delivered what Herdus would call "The Revelation": the claim that reality itself was a constructed illusion, maintained by the Photoli species, and that a sealed entity beneath Etira held the key to shattering the veil.

Whether this Photoli was a Dark Photoli manipulating a madman, a rogue Photoli acting independently, or something else entirely remains one of the galaxy's unsolved mysteries.

Herdus believed utterly. He traveled to Etira, discovered that something was indeed sealed beneath the surface, and founded the Church of the Dreamer Below.

The Dual Leadership (~2577—2624)

Herdus's genius allowed him to run two organizations simultaneously: the Church (in secret) and the Black Market Auction House (publicly, as Leading Auctioneer). He used BMAH infrastructure — smuggling routes, financial networks, hidden bases — to recruit cult members and transport "donors" for memory extraction.

For nearly fifty years, no one connected the BMAH's Leading Auctioneer with the leader of a memory-theft cult.

Saand — The Weapon That Turned (~2605—2624)

In ~2605, Herdus took a Punaab infant named Saand from unknown circumstances. His plan was to raise the child as a vessel for the Dreamer — a living container into which the entity's reconstructed consciousness could be channeled.

What Herdus did not anticipate was that Saand would develop a will of his own. Raised inside the cult, exposed to its horrors, Saand grew to despise everything the Church represented. He became a saboteur — destroying cult operations from within, feeding information to COP agents, and waiting for the moment to strike.

That moment came during the Never Alone incident (~2624). Saand killed Herdus in the cult's inner sanctum beneath Etira, simultaneously transmitting the Church's location and full membership records to the COP.

Beliefs

The Church's theology was a fusion of Herdus's post-ascension madness and genuine metaphysical observations:

  1. Reality is a Photoli-cast lie — The visible universe is a constructed illusion maintained by Photoli energy. Nothing is real.
  2. The Dreamer holds the truth — Beneath the illusion sleeps an entity whose consciousness predates the Photoli. It remembers the real universe.
  3. Awakening shatters the veil — If the Dreamer wakes, the Photoli illusion collapses and true reality is revealed.
  4. Memory theft reconstructs the Dreamer — The Dreamer's consciousness was shattered when the Photoli sealed it. Stolen memories from living beings can be used to reconstruct its mind.

The Memory Extraction Process

The cult's defining atrocity. Victims — usually desperate, isolated, or unknowing — were subjected to a process that stripped their memories while leaving the body alive but empty. The extracted memories were "fed" to the sealed entity beneath Etira through rituals that Herdus personally designed.

Thousands of beings were stripped of their identities. Many victims were later found wandering, alive but unable to recognize their own names, families, or pasts.

The Never Alone Incident (~2624)

The convergence of multiple crisis points:

  1. Saand killed Herdus in the cult's inner sanctum
  2. Saand transmitted full cult records to the COP
  3. The COP launched a military strike on Etira, destroying subsurface Church operations
  4. The Dreamer — whatever it actually was — died or was destroyed during the assault
  5. The Dark Photoli Bah infiltrated the chaos, butchered the Dreamer's remains, and extracted a silver gem of unknown properties

The aftermath:

  • The Church of the Dreamer Below was declared defunct
  • The BMAH was severely damaged (see BMAH article)
  • Saand's testimony became the primary source for understanding the cult's operations
  • The silver gem's location and properties remain classified at the highest COP level

Relations

Faction Relationship
BMAH Former — Herdus led both simultaneously. The BMAH has disavowed the connection
Panemorfa Former ally — cultural connections through art acquisition
Dark Photoli Exploiter — Bah used the Church's collapse to acquire the silver gem. The cult was a means to an end
COP Destroyer — military invasion of Etira eliminated all Church infrastructure
Zenith Door Historical connection — Herdus co-founded Zenith Door before his madness

Legacy

The Church is gone, but its impact persists:

  • Thousands of memory-theft victims remain alive but empty across the galaxy — individuals who cannot remember who they are
  • The silver gem extracted by Bah represents an unknown variable of potentially galactic significance
  • The Revelation's source — the mysterious Photoli who approached Herdus — has never been identified
  • The Dreamer itself — was it a genuine cosmic entity, a geological anomaly, or a Dark Photoli trap? The truth died with it
