"You do not fight a Dark Photoli. You survive one." — COP tactical manual, classification ABSOLUTE
The Dark Photoli are exiles from the Photoli species — a tainted mutation possessing tremendous individual power. Unlike the luminous Photoli who channel light and living essence through communion and restraint, the dark branch shows no restraint in acquiring living essence from sentient beings. They perceive everything in the galaxy as livestock ready to be consumed.
They are not a faction in the traditional sense — no government, no shared agenda, no territory they care to hold. They are arrogant loners, each a civilization-ending threat alone. A single Dark Photoli can destroy armadas, veil its presence from detection, command massive hidden fleets accumulated over centuries, and operate through networks of agents embedded in every major institution — including the COP itself.
The Photoli's own elite hunter unit — the Sih Rihim — pursues them eternally. The galaxy's greatest irony: the only beings who can reliably detect and fight a Dark Photoli are other Photoli.
Origin¶
The Mutation¶
The Dark Photoli mutation is poorly understood even by the Photoli Council. What is known: approximately once per millennium, a Photoli child is born with an inverted essence resonance — instead of radiating energy outward in communion, they pull it inward. Where normal Photoli share light, Dark Photoli consume it.
The mutation appears random. It has no known genetic marker, no predictive indicator, and no cure. The Photoli Council considers it the species' greatest shame — evidence that the cosmos's most luminous beings carry within them the capacity for absolute darkness.
The Ten¶
In recorded galactic history, exactly ten Dark Photoli have ever been born. Five are confirmed deceased — killed by the Sih Rihim, by other factions, or by each other. Five are believed alive, though only two have been positively identified in recent centuries.
The low population does not make them less dangerous. It makes them more — each Dark Photoli has had centuries to accumulate power, resources, and hidden infrastructure.
Powers¶
A Dark Photoli's capabilities exceed those of normal Photoli by orders of magnitude, fueled by the consumed essence of sentient beings:
| Power | Description |
|---|---|
| Essence Consumption | Drains living essence from sentient beings — a process that kills the victim and strengthens the Photoli |
| Presence Veiling | Can mask their existence from all known detection methods, including Photoli resonance scanning |
| Purple Energy Scythes | Weaponized dark-essence constructs — capable of cutting through any known material |
| Pocket Dimensions | Can create and maintain small extradimensional spaces — used for hiding, storage, and imprisonment |
| Teleportation | Near-instantaneous translocation across interstellar distances |
| Environmental Immunity | Resist lethal radiation, vacuum, extreme temperatures, and biological hazards |
| Hidden Fleet Command | Each Dark Photoli commands fleets accumulated over centuries, crewed by thralls, mercenaries, and cultists |
| Agent Networks | Operate through layers of hidden agents embedded in governments, institutions, and factions — including COP staff |
System-Level Threat Classification¶
The COP classifies a confirmed Dark Photoli as a system-level threat — meaning a single individual can render an entire star system uninhabitable. This classification places them alongside only two other threat categories: the Living Factories and the legendary Cataclysm Creatures of the HRZ.
Known Events¶
Om's Fight¶
The Photoli elder Om — one of the oldest and most powerful living Photoli — fought a Dark Photoli in single combat. Om nearly died. The encounter left him weakened for decades, and the injuries were so severe that the Scriptorium of the Lumikir nursed him back to health. This event sparked the enduring bond between the Photoli and the Lumikir — a debt the Photoli have never forgotten.
The Frenir Shadow Lord¶
One Dark Photoli managed to rule an entire planet within the Frenir sector in complete secrecy — a puppet lord behind the slavers' hierarchy. When the Photoli finally identified the infiltration, the resulting battle killed hundreds and destroyed entire fleets. The Dark Photoli was killed, but the collateral damage was catastrophic.
This event is one of the reasons the COP treats Dark Photoli reports with maximum urgency — their ability to infiltrate and subvert existing power structures means that by the time one is discovered, the damage infrastructure is already vast.
The Izar-248 Experiments (~2588)¶
A Dark Photoli discovered genesium — the bizarre biological-mechanical hybrid material found in the crust of Izar worlds — and began creating bioengineered monsters using Dark Photoli essence as a catalyst. These creatures combine organic and inorganic components in ways that violate known taxonomy.
The Everstorm Release (~2624)¶
The genesium experiments were unleashed in the Everstorm, creating an ongoing biological contamination crisis that the Duskbloom Grove is still fighting to contain. The creatures adapt rapidly, resist conventional weapons, and exhibit a disturbing capacity for coordinated behavior.
Bah and the Dreamer (~2624)¶
During the Never Alone incident, the Dark Photoli known as Bah infiltrated Etira — the site where the Church of the Dreamer Below had been worshipping a sealed cosmic horror. While the COP was focused on Herdus.soul and the Church, Bah butchered the Dreamer's corpse and extracted a silver gem of unknown power from its remains.
The gem's properties are classified at the highest COP level. What is known: Bah has not been seen since, and COP analysts assess with high confidence that the gem significantly enhanced an already terrifying adversary.
Known Members¶
| Name | Status | Threat Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| Bah | Active | Retrieved silver gem from Dreamer. Commands a hidden fleet near Etira. COP assesses: planning galactic-scale operation |
| Unknown (Frenir) | Deceased | Enslaved a planet in secret — killed by Photoli hunters after devastating battle |
| Unknown (Izar-248) | Active (presumed) | Genesium experiments, Everstorm creatures. No positive identification in years |
| ~2 unidentified | Unknown | 5 believed alive total. Locations, identities, and capabilities unknown |
COP Protocol — "Absolute Response"¶
When Dark Photoli involvement is confirmed in any sector, the COP activates Absolute Response Protocol:
- Minimum deployment: a full fleet of C11-class warships
- Photoli Council immediately notified — Sih Rihim hunters deployed
- Vaor Scarka — the COP's supreme military commander — personally authorizes and monitors the operation
- Maximum force authorized — no negotiation, no containment, no civilian infrastructure preservation if it means the target escapes
- All sector intelligence classified at the highest level
The protocol exists because every previous attempt at "measured response" to a Dark Photoli has resulted in catastrophic failure. The Frenir Shadow Lord proved that half-measures cost more lives than overwhelming force.
The Sih Rihim¶
The Photoli's own answer to the Dark Photoli threat: an elite hunter unit that has existed for as long as the mutation itself. The Sih Rihim are selected from the most powerful Photoli warriors, trained specifically to detect and combat entities that can veil themselves from normal perception.
Their methods are classified by the Photoli Council. What is known: they work in pairs, they never stop hunting, and they have killed five Dark Photoli across galactic history. The surviving five represent not failure but the extraordinary difficulty of hunting beings that can teleport between star systems and hide in pocket dimensions.
Galactic Indices¶
| Index | Rating | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| GFI (Force) | 9 | Elusive, massively powerful individually. A single Dark Photoli with centuries of accumulated resources can threaten entire star systems. Hidden fleets, agent networks, genesium creatures |
| GWI (Wealth) | 7 | Ancient power accumulated over centuries — artifacts, HRZ materials, genesium, stolen treasures. Effectively unlimited personal resources |
| GPI (Political) | 3 | Subtle infiltration of COP and other institutions. Enormous potential but constantly hunted. Their mere existence shapes Photoli foreign policy |
