"Witnesses and wardens, lending presence if not hands." — Sogmian Kur Faists, describing Photoli contribution to the ONI alliance
The Photoli within the ONI Consortium are the galaxy's most ancient conscious life forms — beings of light that crossed from Andromeda, drain stars for sustenance, shape-shift through light-molding, and carry knowledge older than every other species in the Galia Expanse combined. Their ONI membership was forged during the Convergence War's darkest hour, when a disguised Photoli gave House Garveil the technology to build the Titan's power source — the weapon that ended the war.
On the surface, the Photoli serve as "witnesses and wardens" — counselors offering wisdom and preservation of life. They ask for nothing in return. They claim no territory. They demand no tribute. This selflessness has made them ONI's most trusted advisors for over a century.
And yet — a question that no one in ONI has thought to ask: why did beings who predate every civilization in the galaxy, who built their fortress in the most dangerous region of space, who left an entire galaxy behind them — choose to join a consortium of younger species? The answer the Photoli give is always the same: "We value life." The answer is always true. Whether it is the complete truth is something the Photoli have never been asked to clarify.
Biology — Beings of Living Light¶
Physical Nature¶
No two Photoli look the same. Each is a unique being with:
- Translucent marble-like skin — grey/white with luminous veins running like organic circuits
- Internal light — a glow emanating from within, tracing lines across the body
- Featureless head — angular, helmet-like cranial structure; no visible eyes or mouth
- Geometric glyphs floating around their bodies — circles, arcs, cosmic symbols — an aura of mathematics
- Muscular but ethereal — simultaneously physical and intangible
- No clothing — the body IS the presentation; sculpted like living marble with inner radiance
Light-Shaping (Shape-Shifting)¶
Photoli can change their appearance by molding their light — altering their visual form from subtle changes to full disguise. This explains how Om visits the Lumikir incognito and how the unnamed Photoli who gave House Garveil the Titan technology remained unidentified.
Mastery¶
Unparalleled mastery over physics, time, energy, and light. Ancient Photoli — the Sih Rihim — are beings of pure light whose capabilities exceed what most species consider physically possible.
The Two Tiers¶
Sih Rihim — The Ascended¶
The highest tier of Photoli existence — beings who have completed the transformation into pure light. The Sih Rihim possess immense power and wisdom. They are the closest thing the galaxy has to divine beings — entities of such luminous potency that they can reshape reality within limited spheres.
The Sih Rihim also serve as the Photoli species' hunter unit — eternally pursuing the Dark Photoli exiles. The galaxy's greatest irony: the only beings capable of reliably detecting and fighting a Dark Photoli are other Photoli.
Alumni — The Students¶
Younger Photoli striving to master the elements required for transformation into pure light. Alumni form the majority of Photoli encountered by other species — they interact, observe, and participate in galactic civilization while pursuing their artistic-spiritual path toward ascension.
The Travelers — The Observer Sub-Faction¶
A distinct group that rejects the pursuit of ascension and strict orthodoxy. Travelers are observers who find joy in subtly influencing other species' growth — without direct interference. They distance themselves from the Ascended/Alumni hierarchy to avoid the political machinations of both tiers.
Travelers might inadvertently accelerate a civilization's progress by centuries through a well-placed observation or gift of knowledge. They consider this service — not interference — and draw the line at overtly changing the course of events. The line, however, is blurry. Om, who uplifted the Lumikir from primitive creatures to a functioning civilization, is a Traveler.
Essence Trading — Governance Through Sacrifice¶
The Photoli have no government in any conventional sense. They govern through the sacrifice of their own life force.
| Mechanism | Description |
|---|---|
| Life Essence | Every Photoli carries a finite amount of essence — their life force. They know exactly when they will die (dissipate into natural light) |
| Voting | Collective decisions are settled by pouring essence into a rayanite crystal during an Iris Majesty cycle. A single Photoli can swing a weighty decision — if willing to sacrifice significant lifespan |
| Dispute Resolution | Conflicts between Photoli are settled by essence transfer. The one who sacrifices more wins — literally paying for their position with years of life |
| Prohibition of Conflict | Direct violence between Photoli is strictly forbidden — a legacy of the Andromeda era. All disputes are resolved through essence sacrifice, never force |
This system means that every political decision carries mortal weight. Curiously, Photoli voting patterns on ONI expansion policies consistently show a small faction willing to sacrifice disproportionate amounts of essence — paying with decades of lifespan to push ONI's strategic interests deeper into the High-Risk Zone. When asked why, these Photoli offer the same answer: "The light must reach further." Whether this is philosophy or strategy, no outsider has been able to determine.
History — From Andromeda to ONI¶
The Crossing (~2080)¶
The Photoli crossed into the Galia Expanse through the Night Window Sector, draining the star's energy to recharge after their journey from Andromeda. Whatever drove them from their home galaxy — and why they cannot return — remains one of the deepest mysteries in galactic history.
Early Galia (~2080–2120)¶
- ~2086: Photoli Om is saved by primitive creatures in MRZ-27. In gratitude, he grants them knowledge — they rename themselves the Lumikir, and Om becomes their secret patron saint
- ~2095: Photoli inter the Ah'Rihvael family beneath the oceans of Bluvael — casting an enormous sector-wide electromagnetic illusion to hide the Drowned Vaults
- ~2120: Photoli Ahr visits Planet Earth, using his appearance as a being of light to inspire Vincenzo Gotti and the founding of what became MUD's religion. ECOS believes this was Ahr; MUD's Church of the Holy Servants believes it was God himself. The truth — that a Photoli deliberately catalyzed a human religion — is one of the galaxy's most dangerous secrets
- ~2135: Photoli discover the Dreamer Below in the heart of planet Etira (Yuldun Waste). Unable to destroy it, they steal its memories, seal it underground, and terraform Etira's atmosphere to be lethally hostile
- ~2136: Photoli drain Night Window's star energy and construct Dawnbreak — their hidden fortress in the HRZ
The Convergence War and ONI Formation¶
During the Convergence War, the Photoli joined the ONI Consortium as "witnesses and wardens." Their stated motivation: preservation of life and opposition to the injustice visited upon the Sogmians and the Tufa. No one questioned this. No one has questioned it since.
What has been quietly noted — by Hikibashi intelligence analysts, by the Mierese Lore Keepers' sealed records — is a pattern: the Photoli's counsel, across every crisis, across every opportunity, has consistently favored ONI expansion toward the HRZ. Not once has a Photoli counselor recommended consolidation, withdrawal, or inward focus. The pattern could be coincidence. The pattern spans a century.
The Titan Secret: A disguised Photoli encountered a House Garveil scholar-pilgrim in the HRZ and taught them how to build the power source for the Sogmian Titan. This technology gift was the pivotal moment that turned the Convergence War — without the Titan, the Sogmians would have perished in exile. The Photoli's motive for this gift has never been established. The Sogmians consider it an act of mercy. The Photoli have not corrected them.
Dawnbreak — The Hidden Fortress¶
The Photoli headquarters is a fortress in the High-Risk Zone — hidden, fortified, and deliberately separated from galactic civilization.
| Detail | Description |
|---|---|
| Location | Deep HRZ — coordinates classified |
| Construction | ~2136 — built by draining Night Window's star energy |
| Position | In the HRZ but NOT inside the Cataclysm — positioned as close to the boundary as possible |
| Unanswered | Why did the galaxy's most ancient beings choose to build their only permanent home at the edge of the most dangerous region in the galaxy — facing inward, toward the Cataclysm? |
Dawnbreak's location has puzzled every species that knows of its existence. The Photoli could have built their fortress anywhere — in the safety of ONI space, in the neutral COP sectors, in the uncharted reaches of the galactic rim. Instead, they built it in the HRZ, in the single position that offers the closest possible vantage point to the Cataclysm's boundary. When asked, the Photoli say Dawnbreak exists to "watch over the darkness." The Hikibashi have noted that watchtowers are usually built to face outward — toward the threat. Dawnbreak faces inward — toward something.
The Dark Photoli — The Species' Greatest Shame¶
"You do not fight a Dark Photoli. You survive one." — COP tactical manual
Approximately once per millennium, a Photoli child is born with an inverted essence resonance — instead of radiating energy outward, they pull it inward. Where normal Photoli share light, Dark Photoli consume it.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Total ever born | 10 |
| Confirmed alive | 5 |
| Organization | None — arrogant loners who compete against each other |
| Power level | Each individually a system-level threat — capable of destroying armadas |
| Hunters | The Sih Rihim pursue them eternally |
The Dark Photoli are treated separately as a galactic-level existential threat. They have no loyalty to ONI, no interest in Photoli politics, and no restraint in consuming sentient life. One Dark Photoli created the genesium spawn in the Everstorm. Another struck a deal with Ingbus in Ka'Dara.
Known Characters¶
| Name | Tier | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Om | Sih Rihim / Traveler | Elder — uplifted the Lumikir | Saved by primitive creatures in MRZ-27 (~2086). Visits Lumik incognito via light-shaping. Fought a Dark Photoli in his youth |
| Ahr | Unknown | "The Guide" — God of MUD | Visited Earth (~2120). Inspired Vincenzo Gotti. Left MUD at Exodus (~2400). His appearance catalyzed humanity's founding religion |
| Fah | Unknown | Wandering Pilgrim — founder of the Order of Light | Journeyed through the MRZ inspiring populations with miracles. Founded a cult on MUD's holiest moon (Bilguese, Verzan) |
| Gel | Alumni | Financial Aristocrat | Part of Ayevat's Denebula finance kingdom. Killed — Photoli generally don't care about money; Gel was an exception |
Relations¶
| Faction | Relationship |
|---|---|
| ONI Consortium | Founding member — "Guided by Photoli wisdom." Counselors and wardens. Their counsel has never steered ONI wrong — and has never steered ONI anywhere but deeper into the galaxy |
| Sogmian Sovereignty | Profound debt — a disguised Photoli gave House Garveil the Titan's power source. The Sogmians owe their survival to Photoli intervention |
| MUD | Complicated — Ahr created humanity's founding religion. MUD's Church believes God visited them; ECOS believes it was Ahr. The truth is the galaxy's most dangerous religious secret |
| Dark Photoli | Existential shame — species exiles hunted by the Sih Rihim. Each individually a system-destroying threat |
| Order of Light | Created by Photoli Fah — a cult on MUD territory that worships Photoli divinity. The Photoli species has not officially acknowledged the Order |
| Lumikir | Om's children — uplifted from primitives. Om still visits incognito |
| COP | Co-founder through ONI. Photoli influence on the COP is indirect but ancient |
| Iris | Unknown — the Photoli built their fortress as close to the Cataclysm as possible. They have never explained why |

Galactic Indices¶
| Index | Rating | Assessment |
|---|---|---|
| GFI (Force) | 8 | Individual Photoli capabilities exceed most species' military technology. The Sih Rihim are system-level beings. The species does not field conventional armies — it doesn't need to. A single Photoli can reshape battle outcomes through light-shaping, energy manipulation, and knowledge no other species possesses |
| GWI (Wealth) | 3 | Photoli do not value material wealth in conventional terms. Their currency is essence — life force. By mortal standards they are poor; by cosmic standards they possess knowledge more valuable than any treasury |
| GPI (Political) | 7 | Ancient beings whose counsel shapes faction leaders' decisions. ONI policy is influenced by Photoli wisdom whether ONI knows it or not. Their political moves operate on timescales that shorter-lived species cannot easily analyze — what looks like patience may be strategy, what looks like generosity may be something else entirely |
