Harkend (MRZ-33)

Harkend was first explored by Ustur scouts around ~2442, who found only an unremarkable void.

Overview

Harkend was first explored by Ustur scouts around ~2442, who found only an unremarkable void. Then, at the close of the Convergence War, the sector transformed overnight into an enigma — from the barrenness, a star system arose, bringing with it colossal artificial structures rivaling moons in size, and at its core, an astounding metallic faux star that functions as a real sun, providing light and energy to the entire sector.

The galaxy watched, incredulous, as an entire star system — replete with machine-like celestial bodies teeming with mechanical life forms — materialized from the ether.

[!IMPORTANT] Closer inspection unveiled startling similarities between the constructs on these artificial moons and the physiology of the Ustur. The parallels were so striking that it was tempting to postulate a common origin. However, Harkend's mechanical life forms are entirely separate from the Ustur Temple's "Residents."

Origin: The Living Factory

Harkend is a byproduct of The Living Factory — a powerful and dangerous High Risk Zone faction. Full details on The Living Factory are pending creator introduction.

[!WARNING] The connection between The Living Factory, Harkend, and the Ustur Ancient AI origin remains one of the deepest mysteries in Galia.

The Enigma

The riddles of Harkend are manifold:

  • Who engineered this prodigious artificial constellation?
  • What are its origins? — Did it travel from somewhere, or was it constructed in place?
  • Could there be an undiscovered connection to the Ustur, or had these structures been cloaked in obscurity all along?
  • Why did it appear at the close of the Convergence War? — Coincidence, or triggered by the conflict?

These conundrums remain unresolved, but Harkend's allure only intensifies.

The Relic Barons

The sector's unique properties gave birth to the Relic Barons — a group of thinkers and entrepreneurs, mostly of Ustur origins, that seek to collect and use the unique trinkets found in Harkend.

  • Investment: The Barons invest hefty amounts of ATLAS to propel the exploration and colonization of the system
  • Goal: Discovering new unique items that Harkend brought from the void
  • Composition: Primarily Ustur, but open to others drawn by the mystery
  • As new groundbreaking technological relics are unearthed, the Barons rejoice
  • ~2550: The Relic Barons discover a device that pacifies the automatons of Harkend within a certain range, allowing them to start permanent colonies in the sector to systematically explore and uncover its secrets

Narrative Hooks

  • The Living Factory: What is the connection between The Living Factory (HRZ) and Harkend's sudden appearance?
  • Ustur Origin Connection: The parallels between Harkend's constructs and Ustur physiology are too striking to ignore — does this connect to the Ancient AI origin truth?
  • Convergence War Trigger: Did the end of the war somehow awaken or summon Harkend? Was the Iris energy release a catalyst?
  • Relic Economy: The Relic Barons create a unique economic model — treasure hunting as venture capital
  • Mechanical Life: Are Harkend's mechanical life forms sentient? Do they react to Ustur presence?
  • Functional Faux Star: An artificial sun powering an entire sector — the energy implications are staggering
