The Survivors of Izar-248¶
When the gravitational catastrophe of ~1965 shattered the moons and devastated the surface of Izar-248, a handful of survivors fled into the deep underground of the main planet.
Overview¶
When the gravitational catastrophe of ~1965 shattered the moons and devastated the surface of Izar-248, a handful of survivors fled into the deep underground of the main planet. Over centuries, these descendants of the once-great civilization adapted to a subterranean existence — losing their ancestral knowledge but gaining resilience.
The Descent (~1965)¶
- The few survivors of the collapse fled underground to escape the high-speed debris destroying the surface
- Their retreat was desperate and unplanned — they brought only what they could carry
- As they descended deeper into the planet's crust, their highly advanced knowledge was slowly lost
- The dangerous depths demanded survival instincts over intellectual preservation
- Each generation that grew up in darkness remembered less of their ancestors' achievements
The Dark Period (~1965–2005)¶
- For approximately 40 years, the survivors struggled in the underground depths
- The environment was hostile — dangerous fauna, limited resources, no sunlight
- Starvation was the primary threat — no known food sources in the deep caverns
- Cultural traditions and scientific knowledge eroded with each generation
- They clung to survival with nothing but determination
The Paclets Discovery (~2005)¶
[!IMPORTANT] The discovery of Paclets is the pivotal moment that saved the Izar-248 survivors from extinction.
- Paclets: A highly nutritious underground plant capable of growing without sunlight
- Enabled the survivors to establish underground plantations — the first sustainable food source
- Freed the population from constant foraging, allowing some degree of settled civilization
- The Paclets became the foundation of underground agriculture in Izar-248
The First Underground City (~2120)¶
- After over a century of scattered survival, the Izar people pooled their remaining knowledge
- They created their first underground city, using the last remaining artifacts from the surface-era civilization
- This marked the transition from mere survival to active civilization-building in the depths
- The city was built around Paclets farming infrastructure
Centuries of Adaptation (~2240)¶
- By this point, hundreds of years without exposure to sunlight had changed the Izar people
- Both their bodies and minds were altered by the subterranean existence
- They spread their colonies throughout the underground networks of the main planet
- The nature of these physical and psychological changes remains to be documented
The Colony Network (~2240 onward)¶
- Multiple underground settlements connected through a network of deep tunnels
- Economy centered on Paclets agriculture and whatever resources the depths provide
- Isolated from the surface world and from Galia at large — most of the galaxy doesn't know they exist
- Their original identity as the people of the fallen civilization is largely forgotten
The Genesium Horror (~2588)¶
[!CAUTION] A Dark Photoli experimented with genesium on the surface of Izar-248 (Event 237, ~2588). The resulting monsters descended into the depths, seeking out the underground populations. Many colonies were destroyed in the ensuing conflict.
- Terrible monsters formed from genesium experiments on the surface
- These creatures somehow sensed or sought the underground inhabitants
- They descended into the depths, attacking the colony network
- Many colonies were destroyed in the fighting
- The survivors' fate in the aftermath remains unknown
