Lumik (MRZ-27)¶
Lumik is etched in cosmic history through its evocative name, derived from its ruling inhabitants, the Lumikir.
Overview¶
Lumik is etched in cosmic history through its evocative name, derived from its ruling inhabitants, the Lumikir. In their ancient tongue, Lumikir translates to "enlightened minds" — a testament to this species' age-old dedication to the relentless quest for knowledge.
The Lumikir¶
Origin¶
- Roots steeped in stories of simple stargazers
- ~2086: Forebears aided the Photoli Om during an epoch of crisis — they were primitive creatures at the time
- As a token of gratitude, the Photoli imbued them with wisdom and profound clarity
- The Lumikir took this gift as a divine calling — knowledge became their purpose
- They renamed themselves Lumikir ("enlightened minds") in honor of this transformation
Physical Description¶
- Resemble Twitch from League of Legends, but slightly more swollen/bulky
- Four arms and four legs — multi-limbed physiology
- Small, industrious beings built for archival and cataloguing work
Identity¶
- Name means "enlightened minds" in their ancient tongue
- A species defined entirely by their dedication to knowledge
- From stargazers to galaxy-scale archivists — one of the most complete origin stories in Galia
Philosophy¶
The Lumikir treat knowledge with religious devotion. Their purpose is to store knowledge — not to practice it, not to develop it, but to guard it. This is the defining distinction between the Lumikir and academic institutions like Iris Academy.
The Erruts (Military Force)¶
- A specialized segment of the Lumikir people called the Erruts
- A highly specialized combat force whose sole purpose is to protect the integrity of the archives
- They do not fight wars of expansion or ideology — only defensive operations for the Scriptorium
- This military force is why no one has successfully erased knowledge from the Scriptorium
The Scriptorium¶
[!IMPORTANT] The Scriptorium is the largest information repository in the entire galaxy. Its primary library now rivals the very dimensions of a planet. It is virtually impossible to erase knowledge stored here — you would have to destroy Lumik completely.
History¶
- ~2112: Erected by the Lumikir as a monumental repository dedicated to preserving history, truths, and myriad knowledge — irrespective of peril or price
- At founding, it was a small library with a novel concept: knowledge trading for any visitors
- Over eons, expanded from a humble archive to a colossal databank
- ~2397: Lumikir create the SDU technology and tiered classification system, beginning to actively purchase knowledge from all species across Galia
- ~2481: The Scriptorium has expanded to cover half of the Lumikir homeworld — a physical testament to their unrelenting dedication to knowledge preservation
- Its primary library now rivals the dimensions of a planet — the crown jewel of information repositories in the galaxy
- ~2522: The Scriptorium is raided by unknown attackers. Many records from the Convergence War are stolen or destroyed. The Lumikir civilization cries tears of blood and promises justice. This traumatic breach — the only successful attack on the Scriptorium — drives the Lumikir to massively reinforce their defenses and redundancy mechanisms
- ~2535: In response to the raid, the Scriptorium creates a personal guard comprised of veterans from the Convergence War — a dedicated protective force to ensure no breach ever occurs again
- ~2585: The Scriptorium has grown so massive that it is reorganized throughout the entire Lumikir homeworld — a testament to the relentless scale of their archival mission
Operating Principles¶
- Has steadfastly remained neutral — gates open to scholars, sages, and seekers from every corner of the cosmos
- Welcomes all, irrespective of origins or allegiances
- One unwavering condition: the knowledge one seeks must be matched with its due price
- A symbol of the galaxy's collective memory and the Lumikir's undying commitment to enlightenment
Redundancy & Protection¶
- The Scriptorium creates mechanisms of redundancy to protect all stored information
- It is virtually impossible to erase knowledge stored there — unless Lumik itself were completely destroyed
- Physical protection handled by the Erruts combat force
SDU Classification System (Scriptorium Data Units)¶
The Lumikir operate a formal classification system for all information. The price depends on the rank.
Rank D — Trivial Information¶
Example: The name of the homeworld of the COP factions or the names of the sectors in the safe zone.
Information freely accessible to the public. Holds little value in the marketplace — anyone can easily obtain it without much effort.
Rank C — Public but Specific Information¶
Example: Knowledge about the ongoing research projects at Iris Academy or the latest financial results from CARY Farming operations in Exodus.
Requires some effort and research to compile, but still available through public means. Useful depending on the situation and the buyer's needs.
Rank B — Valuable Secrets and Recent Events¶
Example: Discovering a secret link between a merchant prince and a politician in the regional DAO.
Contains fresh, relevant information acquirable through specialized means. Often exposes secretive dealings or recent events — highly sought after by corporations and governments.
Rank A — Planet or Region-Altering Information¶
Example: Acquiring proof that a regional government has been receiving bribes from Jorvik to smuggle drugs into faction space.
Holds critical information that can influence planetary politics or disturb entire regions of Galia. Extremely valuable — cannot be accessed through normal means.
Rank S — Faction-Altering Secrets¶
Example: Learning the location and date of a MUD Fleet General's assassination attempt or discovering a genesium vein in the High Risk Zone.
Known only by a select few with high-level access. Can shift faction-level decisions — incredibly dangerous to possess and highly profitable to sell.
Rank X — Galaxy-Altering Knowledge¶
Example: Discovering the current location of Iris and learning the way to access the Cataclysm.
[!CAUTION] Rank X SDUs contain information that could disrupt the entire galaxy. Possessing this knowledge makes the Data Runner a target for numerous powerful entities. Rank X data is priceless and often triggers galaxy-wide conflict.
Relationship with Iris Academy¶
Philosophical Difference¶
| Aspect | Lumikir / Scriptorium | Iris Academy |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Store and guard knowledge | Develop and apply knowledge |
| Philosophy | Devotional / religious | Rational / scientific |
| Approach | Preservation | Research & innovation |
| Neutrality | Absolute | COP-linked (with autonomy) |
Cooperation Agreement¶
- A formal cooperation agreement exists between the two institutions
- Lumikir want to store the knowledge that Iris Academy produces
- Iris Academy wants to research the knowledge that the Lumikir hold
- The real relationship happens between individuals of both institutions — organic, scholar-to-archivist bonds
Photoli Om & the Lumikir¶
The Origin Event¶
When Om was young, he was traveling through space alone when he became involved in a fight against a Dark Photoli. Om nearly died, crash-landing in the Lumikir's system. The Lumikir took him in and nursed his wounds back to health.
As gratitude, Om imbued the Lumikir with wisdom and profound clarity — a gift they transformed into their civilizational purpose.
Current Relationship¶
- Om visits Lumik from time to time, but normally incognito to see old friends
- The relationship is much more a mythic heritage and an almost religious devotion from the Lumikir
- The Lumikir revere the Photoli's gift of wisdom as their foundational calling
- Om treats it more casually — visiting old friends, not commanding followers
Narrative Hooks¶
- The Data Runner economy: The SDU system is the backbone of galactic intelligence — and Lumik is where it's catalogued
- Erruts in action: What happens when someone actually tries to destroy knowledge? The Erruts mobilize
- Om's visits: The god walks among the archivists, unrecognized — a powerful narrative beat
- Velloris vs. Scriptorium: Velloris erases proof. The Scriptorium preserves everything. These institutions are philosophical opposites
- Rank X SDUs: The most dangerous knowledge in the galaxy exists here — guarded by monk-archivists
