Neuno Sector (ONI 1)

"Neuno does not speak. It does not think. It feels — and what it feels, we become." — Ondara Valel, Chief Lore Keeper

Overview

Neuno — "Living Home" in the Mierese tongue — is the sentient planet that serves as the Mierese homeworld and the political capital of the ONI Consortium. A colossal space parasite older than three thousand years, Neuno communicates not through words but through subtle sensations — shifts in temperature, vibrations in the ground, changes in wind that the wisest Lore Keepers attempt to interpret. The planet is so renowned that the entire sector bears its name.

Unlike Iris — a sentient entity with a fractured cosmic mind generating galactic currents — Neuno is more primal and instinctual, closer to an animal intelligence. It nurtures and protects the Mierese, but it also confines them: before an unknown extraterrestrial species arrived and guided the Mierese into the cosmic age, the planet functioned as both guardian and warden.

"The planet is alive. Not metaphorically alive — alive the way a predator is alive. It watches. It adjusts. It decides." — Iris Academy research report, classified

The Sentient Planet

Communication

Neuno communicates like an animal — through subtle sensations rather than language. A warmth in the soil may signal approval; a sudden wind may warn of danger; a tremor may express distress. Only the most experienced Lore Keepers can distinguish between Neuno's moods and ordinary weather. The process is imprecise and deeply personal — two Keepers may interpret the same sensation differently, leading to theological disputes that have shaped Mierese history.

The Living Terrain

Neuno's landscapes morph rapidly, reflecting the planet's fluctuating temperaments. Mountains may shift over decades. Rivers redirect themselves. Forests grow or retreat in response to unknown stimuli. The Mierese draw resilience from this ever-shifting landscape — a people shaped by a world that never holds still.

Resources

Rich in biomass and food — Neuno's sentient ecosystem produces abundant organic resources, though the planet's moods can suddenly alter growing conditions. Mierese agriculture is adaptive by necessity, practiced through oral tradition rather than written manuals.

The Six Ancestral Regions

The Mierese homeworld is divided into six ancestral regions, each lending its name to the Mierese who originate from it. A Mierese's third name (surname) identifies their regional ancestry:

Region Characteristics Notable Mierese
Eskscarka Harsh coastal territory — birthplace of the Hikibashi. The Eskscarka Currents (ocean channels) inspired the three Hikibashi branches: Deep, Riptide, and Undertow Volmik Vaor Scarka (ONI leader), Selkora Scarka (Lore Keeper apprentice)
Morvalel Cultural heartland — home of the Resonance Halls and the Lore Keepers' sacred archives Ondara Valel (Chief Lore Keeper)
Umbyara Densely forested and remote — Mierese from this region are known for independence and resistance to authority Trill Yara (Hikibashi Riptide operative)
Vireko Mountainous interior — watchful and observant. Produced many Undertow operatives Mirsk Eko (Hikibashi Undertow chief)
Kaljura River delta region — rich in oral tradition and storytelling culture Muumaan Jura (Lore Keeper, Chapter of Stars)
Shattered Spines Uninhabited — a region of jagged rock formations that even Neuno seems to avoid. No Mierese tribe claims it. Geological evidence suggests a catastrophic event occurred here millennia ago

The Grand Tale

The Grand Tale is the Mierese religion — an oral epic without beginning or end, carried in the memories of the Lore Keepers. It tells of Neuno's birth, the Mierese's emergence, and the unfolding of their cosmic purpose. The Mierese have no written language — the Grand Tale exists only in memory and voice, making the Lore Keepers the most politically powerful cultural institution in Mierese society.

Three Sealed Chapters of the Grand Tale are known to exist — passages so dangerous that only the Chief Lore Keeper knows their contents. Ondara Valel guards all three.

The Liberation

An unknown extraterrestrial species arrived at Neuno and guided the Mierese into the cosmic age, breaking their planetary seclusion. Their identity remains one of the galaxy's great mysteries — a future lore hook that the Mierese themselves discuss with reverence and unease.

Political Influence

ONI Consortium Capital

Neuno is the seat of ONI governance. The ONI Central Space Station (CSS) orbits or is stationed near the planet, serving as the consortium's administrative hub — a massive rotating station with architecture designed to accommodate all four ONI species (Mierese, Sogmian, Punaab, Photoli). The current ONI leader, Volmik Vaor Scarka, governs from this station — a Hikibashi-trained Mierese assassin who became the galaxy's most powerful diplomat.

The Mierese Leadership Rotation

ONI's executive leadership rotates among its four species. The current Mierese rotation gave rise to Vaor Scarka's presidency — a figure who embodies the paradox of Mierese culture: a species that prizes stories above wealth, yet whose intelligence operatives (the Hikibashi) are among the deadliest in the galaxy.

The Lore Keepers' Hall

The Resonance Halls on Neuno house the Lore Keepers — the custodians of the Grand Tale and the Mierese species' collective memory. Their political influence is immense: no major Mierese decision is taken without consulting the Keepers, and the Sealed Chapters they guard represent knowledge considered too dangerous for public consumption.
