Never Alone Campaign — Part 1

The campaign follows the player character (a spacefaring captain) who rescues Saand, a white-furred Punaab who has lost all memories of his past.

Overview

The Never Alone Campaign is Star Atlas's first interactive narrative quest, following an unnamed Captain and an amnesiac Punaab named Saand as they explore the Medium Risk Zone during the Council of Peace's military incursion.

The campaign follows the player character (a spacefaring captain) who rescues Saand, a white-furred Punaab who has lost all memories of his past. Together they traverse the galaxy searching for clues to Saand's identity — visiting the ECOS Superphoenix, the Scriptorium of Lumikir, the Iris Academy on Carvum, the Volant Station, and battling Jorvik raiders along the way.

The narrative unfolds through mission steps, each tied to in-game activities (warping, scanning, attending events, quizzes). Part 1 covers the initial exploration, the discovery of the Superphoenix, treasure hunting in battle graveyards, and the journey through Galia's cultural landmarks.

Narrative Arc — Part 1

Mission 1: Exploring the Medium Zone

Step 1 — Setting the Course

  • The Captain and Saand board their ship. Saand immediately opens the galaxy map
  • Saand divides the map into 10,000 grid squares for systematic exploration
  • The Captain connects to the COP fleet network to track civilian fleet positions
  • They create a heat map of fleet concentrations and plan routes to less-crowded areas

Step 2 — The Bar Fight & The Prophecy

  • Stranded at a small space station during a COP inspection (Pearce X6 checkpoint)
  • Two massive humans assault a drunk Mierese fortune teller in a bar
  • Saand intervenes → sticks a Peli fish stick into the bully's eyeball → bar fight erupts
  • The fortune teller, now revealed as genuinely prescient, reads Saand's paw:
  • "Yours is not an easy fate, dear Punaab, but you will find answers at the wings of a mythological human bird"
  • The Captain recognizes this as the ECOS Superphoenix
  • The fortune teller had told the bully he'd be "blinded by a fish stick" — which came true

Step 3 — The Superphoenix

  • Against all odds, the duo locates the ECOS Superphoenix titan during the COP conflict
  • First-person description of the Superphoenix interior:
  • The hangar has real sunlight, emerald grass, a grove paradise integrated with high-tech facilities
  • Internal open-air trains connect areas, with no windows — summer breeze on your face
  • Vast crop plains growing under warm day-light conditions inside the titan
  • A nature-integrated city — benches, architecture, canals all built into nature
  • Fashion stores with pure cotton clothing, bars with exotic ECOS beverages
  • Seminars by druidesses explaining ECOS ethos
  • Parks with firefly clouds dancing toward lakes at sunset
  • Saand's memory trigger: He finds a tree by a lake with two paw prints (his and a smaller one) and the word "Etira" carved beneath them
  • Saand was here before, with someone important, but can't remember who
  • "Etira" becomes the next quest objective

Mission 1: Searching for Treasures

Step 1 — The Battle Graveyards

  • The duo explores the aftermath of COP battles — floating wreckage graveyards
  • The scale of destruction is staggering — ships the size of moons reduced to debris

Steps 2 & 3 — The Jorvik Chase (Fimbul Mambas)

  • While scavenging, Jorvik raiders in Fimbul Mambas attack their ship
  • Saand instinctively knows: "Jorvik raiders don't negotiate, only captains" — suggesting buried knowledge
  • A chase through debris fields — Saand provides cover fire, the Captain pilots
  • A Mamba missile strikes a Packlite wreck nearby, nearly destroying them
  • The small gap between debris saves them temporarily
  • The Mambas close in — "Mambas are made for this kind of situation"
  • Saved by the Dawn Vanguard — an enormous C11 commanded by a Sogmian
  • The Jorvik raiders try to flee and are obliterated by missile barrage
  • Tractor beam pulls the duo inside the Dawn Vanguard

Exploration Quests: Council of Peace Townhalls

  • The duo attends COP Townhall transmissions — major galactic events
  • All VIPs, DAC leaderships, governors attend
  • Saand dresses as a mini version of Seshael Vegnar (COP spokesman) for one event

Diplomacy Quests: Becoming Famous in Galia

  • The Captain creates social media profiles for Saand, hoping someone recognizes him
  • Saand turns out to be a natural performer — "perhaps he was an actor before losing his memory"
  • His show "Papa Saand" gains a following. Catchphrase: "Papa Naab"
  • Saand becomes a minor social media celebrity

Research Quests: Echoes of Convergence

Planet Ahkavorah — The Purple Compound

  • An Ustur colony deep in the MRZ, behaving suspiciously
  • At night — enormous purple compound erupts from a subterranean Convergence War base
  • The compound defies gravity (floats upward), only appears at night, dissipates in sunlight
  • Professor Caolany.soul explains: it slowly poisoned non-Ustur residents over years
  • The Ustur are excavating under Elder Council orders to clean up and investigate
  • The CORE dramatic recollection series documents these findings
  • Saand feels connected to the Convergence War period — which ended 100+ years ago

Planet Vergilia — CORE Studies

  • Saand becomes obsessed with studying CORE transcripts about the Convergence War
  • He feels the period "resonates with his past" — as if he lived during that era
  • His favorite CORE character is Timpo, who searches for what's most important in life

Mondra 8 — The Ludic Museum

  • A museum recreation of the Mondra 7 space station — the stage of Convergence War events
  • Features actors playing Huricanno's family, Order of Light members, MUD agents
  • Saand identifies the number "27" on a masked performer — without knowing how he knows

Planet Carvum — Commander Goe

  • Commander Goe — retired MUD veteran who led HRZ expeditions, possibly saw Iris itself
  • Lives on a farm near the Iris Academy. Daughter Helle arranged the meeting
  • Goe suffers memory blanks about his HRZ days — can't remember crucial details
  • Upon seeing Saand, Goe panics: "No!!! Go away! Not again, please no!"
  • He screams for guards, calls Saand a "Thief""He comes to steal from me again! The Light!"
  • This implies Saand and Goe have met before — during the Convergence War era
  • Goe's reaction suggests Saand stole something called "The Light" from him

Exploration Quests: The SSRD

  • The duo visits a Sapient Species Resources Department office to register proper COP IDs
  • Seykel Ohmson (MUD) processes their applications
  • The Captain lies about Saand's background — claims he's from a Mierese orphanage on Neuno
  • They choose faction alignment and complete a general knowledge test
  • An SSRD intern creates a social media post about the duo

Exploration Quests: The Scriptorium of Lumikir

  • The duo visits the Scriptorium — Galia's largest repository of knowledge
  • A whole world dedicated to being a vault of artifacts and information
  • Guide Ehandra (Mierese) shares the Lumikir origin story:
  • A Photoli scout named Om crashed on a planet of stargazers
  • Instead of exploiting him, they healed him and asked only for stories
  • Om blessed them — broadened their minds to understand nearly every language
  • He named them Lumikir ("enlightened minds")
  • They vowed to preserve history and knowledge for eternity
  • The Scriptorium spans thousands of kilometers under a dome
  • Transport via floating platforms resembling Rainbow Arc external plates
  • Saand feels he may have been there before

Exploration Quests: Bounty Bar & Atlas Brew

  • Bounty Bar: Neutral establishment where captains and bounty hunters coexist
  • Owner: Carmonayole (Punaab mixologist)
  • Signature drink: Blo Dyoni
  • An ancient MUD song plays: The Platter - Sixteen Tons

  • Atlas Brew: Live podcast/event hosted by three personalities

  • An Ustur in an animal suit telling lore stories
  • A Mierese making spicy comments with energy drinks
  • An unidentified person in a vintage MUD astronaut suit with a prairie dog
  • Guests include Mad D'Meetney (the Astrobard) and Professor Saven Sablou

Diplomacy Quests: Volant Station & The Wandering Caravan

The Volant Station

  • The duo arrives at the MUD Central Space Station's famous harbor
  • Statues depicting faction history, including the three faction leaders signing the Treaty of Peace
  • Saand stops before Bekalu's statue, reflecting on his suffering: "Was all this suffering worth it?"
  • MUD propaganda lowers costs to drive tourism

The Wandering Caravan

  • An enigmatic troupe of 33 performers arrives at the Volant Station
  • Their entrance involves a rainbow light descending from the sky, 32 painted ships performing aerial maneuvers, and an enormous mothership
  • The Circus Master appears — tall, thin, wearing a mask with symbols, dressed in red/gold/black
  • Three acts representing Past, Present, and Future:
  • Past: A dancer (wearing mask #27) performs on an ebony canvas — orange liquid paints Convergence War scenes through dance. She becomes every character — Osia, Mierese generals, starving mothers, Paizul in death, and finally Bekalu at the Last Stand button
  • Present: Competing fog forms — a masculine hymn praising COP power vs. a feminine lament for those excluded from COP's safe haven. The two forces clash and leave the word "Present"
  • Future: (Not yet described — presumably in Parts 2-3)

Memory Milestones

XP Threshold Event Details
5,000 XP A Memory Glimpse Saand sees something on the horizon and the neuro scanner activates — first memory threshold reached

Preparing for a New Adventure

Volant Station — Planning the Lumikir Return

  • Morning at Volant Station. The duo plans their next move
  • Saand now believes Etira is a planet hidden somewhere in the galaxy

  • Races against "the Fox" — a legendary MUD pilot
  • Rules: 10 laps, weapons permitted (non-lethal), no custom/modified modules
  • 8 contestants per bracket, top 2 advance
  • Saand finishes second (behind the Fox) — qualifies for next bracket
  • A kind Sogmian elder from House Xictus comments from the crowd

  • Proposes an emergency cease-fire for negotiations, pending Council DAO approval
  • Political maneuvering to restrain Vaor Scarka's military campaign

Planet Smids — The Fimbul Homeworld (🔑 CRITICAL FIMBUL LORE)

Arrival

  • The duo stops at planet Smids — a prominent harbor in the MRZ, located in Free Harbors
  • Smids is described as chaotic: multitude of small shops, stout engineers, cacophony of alien languages and merchants
  • Everything is buying/selling at all times
  • The Captain (now revealed as Jack) grew up here

Virtin and the Fimbul Workshop

  • Jack visits his childhood friend Virtin — a big blond mechanic with blue eyes
  • Virtin works at the Fimbul workshop on Smids
  • His apprentice Saymid is constantly threatened with dire consequences for mistakes
  • The duo's ship (a Fimbul Lowbie) is left for maintenance

🏭 THE FIMBUL FAMILY HISTORY (Canon-Critical)

Jack explains to Saand:

"Virtin's grandfather, Ben Y, started the Fimbul company as one of the first civilian groups not associated with any factions in the galaxy. He wanted to build ships that were cheap, with good quality, and allowed people to do whatever they wanted in the galaxy."

  • Ben Y — legendary MUD craftsman, founder of Fimbul Industries on planet Smids
  • Company Motto: "Fimbul builds ships for the people, that's all"
  • After Ben Y died, his three sons continued running the company
  • The company split because each brother had a different vision:
  • Virtin's father — kept the original vision (neutral, ships for the people). Died to ensure Fimbul and Smids would remain independent
  • The two uncles — founded competing "Fimbul Companies" producing weapons for ECOS, warlords, and Jorvik
  • Virtin (Ben Y's grandson) now leads the original Fimbul on Smids, carrying on his father's and grandfather's legacy
  • The uncles are currently pressuring Virtin to reunite Fimbul under one banner and fight the COP
  • Virtin refuses: "I will be thrice damned if I go back on the old man's resolve"

Fimbul's Current Political Crisis

  • The COP MRZ incursion has divided the Fimbul family further
  • The uncles' splinter companies build "machines of death" for ECOS and Jorvik
  • Virtin's branch maintains strict neutrality — Smids is under Fimbul influence and serves as safe harbor
  • Free Harbors is described as being "under the influence of Fimbul" — confirming Fimbul's territorial significance

The SDU System

  • Virtin advises: bring SDUs (Survey Data Units) to the Lumikir — they trade information for information
  • SDUs are compilations of data about star systems, planets, events — "precious data"
  • The Scriptorium gives free access initially to hook visitors, then charges steep prices for real information

Return to Lumikir — The Price of Knowledge

Truce Announcement

  • En route to Lumikir, Vaor Scarka announces a pause in COP's MRZ intervention
  • Three milestones achieved: Frenir slave traders destroyed, Jorvik influence disrupted, Pergamos agreements signed
  • Cease-fire declared, with threat of escalation if attacks resume

Scriptorium AI — Kiki

  • The duo returns to the Scriptorium and interacts with Kiki, the sassy Scriptorium AI
  • Kiki searches for "Etira" and finds classified information:
  • Basic info = Tier A (extremely rare classification)
  • Premium info = Tier S (nearly impossible to obtain)
  • Saand trades 35 SDUs — not quite enough for Tier A
  • Ehandra (the Mierese guide from Part 1) intervenes on their behalf — Kiki calls her "Kuradora" (B-rank information, meaning unknown)
  • Kiki accepts the deal and provides the Tier-A data cube

🌍 ETIRA REVEALED (Tier-A Intelligence)

"Etira is a planet localized in the northern part of Galia in the Sector known as Yuldun Waste, known in the underworld to be the current home of the (S-Tier information). Etira is known to be the current most prominent harbor of illegal trading in Galia, and access to the planet is gated by factions that organize trading on the planet."

  • Etira = a planet in Yuldun Waste — the galaxy's premier black market hub
  • The COP has a 1 billion ATLAS bounty for coordinates/access — never collected in 10 years
  • Any item can be found and traded there
  • Coordinates and controlling factions are S-Tier classified
  • Vessels destroyed by planetary defenses without an invitation

The Ambush

  • Leaving the Scriptorium at night, two mysterious attackers in dark clothes block the duo
  • They speak an unknown language: "Yebe in muwary, ark to no vegari"
  • They use stun sticks (non-lethal) — not the Order of Seasons (who use lethal weapons)
  • Jack and Saand fight them off — Jack breaks one's teeth with a metal pipe, Saand slashes the other with broken glass
  • Lumikir watch sirens scare the attackers away
  • Someone hired them to steal the Etira data cube

Captain Jack's Backstory — Ka-dara (MRZ-28)

The Smuggler Past

  • Jack was part of Captain Alaister Jast's smuggling crew
  • Crew included Jack, Amara and Lucaria (twin Sogmian sisters), and Virtin (who stayed at the forge)
  • They smuggled illegal goods across Galia — drugs, relics to Safe Zone bigshots and Frenir junkies
  • Someone inside the COP seemed to protect them from getting caught

The Ka-dara Horror

  • Alaister accepted a job to deliver exotic HRZ cargo to MRZ-28 (Ka-dara)
  • The cargo contained microscopic HRZ insectoids that escaped and inhabited the crew's lungs
  • Ingbus (the Ka-dara AI) discovered the insects were IN them — and considered the crew "valuable resources"
  • Alaister sold out his crew for ATLAS, giving Ingbus permission to experiment on them
  • Jack was imprisoned for ~2 months — daily experiments: forced running to collapse, starvation periods, wound-healing studies, combat against creatures
  • Ingbus doesn't understand biological beings as sentient — treats them as resources for its resurrection research
  • After exhausting their usefulness, Ingbus released them at Foy Fields
  • The Order of Patrah (kind Usturs) helped them recover

The Aftermath

  • Amara — went after Alaister for revenge, killed him, joined Panemorfa as a captain (underworld artifact recovery)
  • Lucaria — renounced the outlaw life, joined the Order of Patrah to help distressed populations
  • Jack — wanted to forget everything, became an honest captain. Never saw any of them again until meeting Saand

Return to Smids — Virtin and Amara

The Argument

  • Jack tells Virtin everything about Etira. Virtin says only Amara (now underworld-connected) can help
  • Jack refuses — painful past. Virtin pushes back, saying it's about Saand, not Jack
  • Jack storms out. Virtin: "Go. That's what you do best anyway"
  • Saand tackles Jack on the cold streets of Smids, demanding honesty about their friendship
  • Jack opens up about his past — first time he's been vulnerable with Saand

Harkend Detour

  • En route to the Zavijava Zone (where Amara is), they pass through Harkend
  • Encounter Faurrest.tcher — Ustur leader of a Relic Barons expedition
  • They fight robotic constructs together
  • Faurrest gives them a construct core — portable energy source (explosive if mixed with acids)
  • Harkend description: artificial celestial bodies, faux planets, weird robots, unknown origin post-Convergence War

Finding Amara — Zavijava Zone

  • Zavijava Zone has time distortion fields — some areas frozen in time for 100+ years, others accelerated 3x
  • Amara's base is a stunning Navak-Busan architecture construction built around a time distortion beam
  • An underworld party is in full swing inside
  • Amara recognizes Jack — kisses him, they reunite emotionally
  • She's now wealthy — runs artifact recovery missions for Panemorfa
  • Her deal: she'll take them to Etira in exchange for a date at the Golden Carnival

Saand's Part 2 Memory Milestones

XP Threshold Event Details

The Bankers of Pergamos Shadow banking, financial backbone Weakened — Pergamos agreements with COP
The Church of the Dreamer Below "Benevolent" cult — rapidly rising to dominance Rising power — replacing weakened pillars
  • Amara works for an organization aligned with the Church: "He has received the blessing of the Dreamer Below and is going to save all the galaxy, just as he saved me"
  • Violence against invited guests is forbidden on the surface — but "there are shadows in Etira"
  • Open trading of anything — sentient beings, organs, blood, worse

🔮 THE CHURCH OF THE DREAMER BELOW (Canon-Critical)

Saand's recovered memories reveal the Church's true nature:

Surface Operations

  • Takes care of orphans, heals the sick, provides relief to Convergence War victims
  • Followers receive "the mark of the Dreamer" — erases sins and past errors, produces new blissful memories
  • Tenets: free Galia from COP and Photoli oppression by awakening the Dreamer

True Operations

  • Memory Manipulation: Can extract, replace, and segment memories at will — technology beyond known science
  • Harvests raw, painful memories and feeds them to the Dreamer Below to nourish and awaken him
  • In exchange, the Dreamer produces fake blissful memories — Church members learn all secrets held by worshippers
  • Amara's MRZ-28 trauma has been completely erased — she remembers everything about Jack except Ka-dara

The Dreamer Below

  • An actual imprisoned God beneath Etira — not a metaphor
  • A god-like creature that "not even the Photoli could totally defeat"
  • The Photoli imprisoned it but could not destroy it
  • Feeds on real memories, excretes false ones
  • The Church's ultimate goal: awaken the Dreamer by finding a key the Photoli hid

Herdus.soul — High Priest

  • Ustur, High Priest of the Church of the Dreamer Below
  • "Robust, metallic" voice, "eyes that shone with that unnatural green glow, like emeralds set aflame"
  • Hooded, cloaked in shadows, commands the temple operations

🧠 SAAND'S TRUE IDENTITY REVEALED (Canon-Critical)

Memory Revelation — the full truth:

  1. Saand was a vessel of the Church of the Dreamer Below
  2. He was fed the memories of dozens of living souls to strengthen him — their essence impressed on his mind
  3. His mission: steal from Commander Goe the map showing where the Photoli hid the key to the Dreamer's prison
  4. Herdus.soul's command: "Take it from him, and leave no trace of your action behind, otherwise our enemies will be alerted"
  5. This explains Commander Goe's reaction in Part 1: "No!!! He comes to steal from me again! The Light!" — "The Light" = the Photoli key/map
  6. Saand responded: "It will be done, Lord Herdus" — he felt pride in being chosen
  7. He crashed on planet Anueyeu — losing his memories (possibly a Church failsafe or escape attempt?)

Part 3 Memory Milestones

XP Threshold Event Details
Glimpse Temple vision "Some of you will be released before others from this lucid dream that some like to call Galia..." — the High Priest's voice. Walls alive, breathing in sync with fear. "The dreamer must be awakened"
Fragment The Blessing A hooded figure (Herdus.soul) declares: "You bear the blessing of our God... You are the vessel that will nurture the precious treasures that will awaken the One". Metallic cold hand on Saand's fur. Saand felt pride
Revelation The Mission Herdus.soul orders Saand to steal from Commander Goe. Saand was the Church's instrument, fed memories of dozens to prepare him. "I was their vessel, their instrument of dread"

Finding the High Punaab Girl

  • Saand sneaks out at night to search Etira alone for his lost companion
  • Jack searches desperately with Puri (who can sense Saand's direction)
  • Jack witnesses a Slavers of Frenir slave auction — over 100 captives with Lumanite bracers. Bids on a young MUD girl
  • Puri leads Jack to Madame Jaffa's House of Relaxation — massive pleasure palace complex
  • Madame Jaffa — tall, muscular Sogmian woman. Musical voice, supernatural reflexes, can throw Jack to the floor effortlessly. Hot-cold personality
  • Gathin — one-eyed Sogmian, head of her guards
  • Saand found inside, captured by guards while trying to reach "the artist's room"
  • Jack tries to use Jaffa as hostage — she enjoys it: "My blood starts boiling when boys are this forceful with me"
  • She overpowers them and orders execution — but is interrupted
  • A High Punaab waitress stumbles in — Saand breaks free, tackles her, they embrace, crying
  • She smiles for what appears to be the first time — Jaffa calls off the execution
  • The girl and Saand speak in Punaab dialect — she is the one connected to "Etira" carved on the Superphoenix tree
