Tufa

Biology & Nature

  • Metagenic Anomalies: Born during the creation of Iris (collision of 7 dwarf planets).
  • Metagenic = substances capable of self-alteration, adaptation, and transformation on a molecular or atomic level. This is the unifying property across every Tufa in Star Atlas — regardless of brood, all Tufa materials operate on a metagenic level
  • This is why Tufas are so powerful and also why they are so precious as resources
  • Different broods of Tufas exist across Galia Expanse — they do not all behave the same or follow the same logic, but the metagenic core is universal
  • Diet: Feed on Genesium (Free Energy generated by Iris).
  • Dependence: Cannot stay away from Iris's influence for long.
  • Less complex Tufa = shorter survival time away from Iris.
  • Genesium Tanks: Prepared structures to hold pure genesium for distant campaigns (e.g., Season 0).
  • As Resources: Killing higher-tiered Tufas with very concentrated genesium reserves yields rare metagenic materials that can be used to craft extraordinary ship components and equipment. These materials are among the rarest in the galaxy and require specialized skills to synthesize

Creation Formula

  • Tufa are created when 3 variables combine in stable proportions:
  • Direct Genesium radiation
  • Organic matter
  • High concentration of minerals
  • Genesium is "the glue" that binds the Tufa together
  • Most Tufa created during Iris flare cycles are simply undone — the proportions are wrong, overwhelming the body or lacking enough conscience for basic tasks
  • No two Tufa are the same — their creation doesn't follow a genetic tree

Infestation Mechanics

  • Infestation: Inject genesium into technological devices or creatures to fuse with them.
  • Assimilation: Use target's tech to empower vessels. Sacrifice lowest level Tufa ("Eggs") for this.
  • Fusion: Can absorb other beings. Lower-ranking Tufa routinely fuse/absorb others for daily chores — they have nearly no individual sense of self
  • Complexity scaling: The more complex or large the structure, the higher-ranking the Tufa must be to infest it. Complex structures (like ships) require high-ranking Tufa to coordinate the assimilation and unify different Tufa masses
  • Tufa build their colonies and civilization by infesting other species' technology

Hierarchy & Society

The 7 Titans (The Fathers)

  • Origin: Each of the 7 Dwarf Planets that collided with Iris became a Titan.
  • Nature: Highly intelligent, god-like power, absolute control over their brood.
  • Self-Perception: Titans envision themselves as actual gods — they rarely communicate with inferior Tufa or other beings, except through their Listeners
  • Mental Link: Communicate via radiation beams (perceptible only to Tufa). Even barely intelligent Tufa can understand a Titan's desire and act accordingly
  • Genesium Synthesis: Only Titans (and some Awakened) can synthesize genesium spontaneously near Iris.
  • Feudal System: Titans replenish high-ranking officers ("feudal lords") who then control the brood. If high-ranking Tufa spend too much genesium creating lesser Tufa, they must return to their Titan for replenishment — or devour other Tufa / find natural genesium veins
  • Status: 6 are in the Cataclysm. 1 escaped (Thionae) and hides in an asteroid field near Iris.
  • Critical Vulnerability: If something happens to the rift inside Iris, all Tufa and Titans would collapse. The Titans know this — finding a solution to this existential dependency is a core motivation

The Broods

  • Variability: Traits reflect the Titan's personality (some uniform, some chaotic).
  • Listeners: Special breed tasked with directing the mindless hordes on behalf of their Titans.
  • Awakened Tufa: High-ranking, fully developed sense of self. Only Awakened Tufa and Titans can synthesize genesium spontaneously
  • Lesser Tufa: Hive-mind, no sense of self, expendable.
  • Loyalty: Most Tufa are born from their Titan's own bio-matter, mineral matter, and conscience. Loyalty to their Titan is absolute — a Titan can reclaim the fragment of conscience from any Tufa born from them within their territory

The Chalbok Brood (Season 0 Antagonist)

  • Progenitor: Chalbok (Master Tactician, Cold, Revenge-obsessed).
  • Nature: The most hostile brood. Highly tactical and organized.
  • Motivation: Revenge for the Convergence War (Chalbok's brood was heavily harvested).
  • Composition: Small variety of species but unmatched synergy. High number of sentient Tufa (Quality > Quantity).
  • Ioki Invasion: Led by Chalbok's 5 Direct Sons (each unique).

Mechanics

Control Points

  • Function: Fragments of genesium established to sustain Tufa presence far from Iris.
  • Dynamics: Grow if unchecked (spawning higher Tufa). If destroyed, local Tufa wither/die.
  • Deployment: Low-tier points fall randomly from the sky during invasions.

History

  • ~2440: The Birth of the Cataclysm — a rogue planet dense in ORE draws in 7 child planets to collide in a remote region; the collision creates free energy (Genesium) and births the 7 Titans
  • ~2441: Iris acquires a certain degree of self-awareness
  • ~2443: The 7 Titans awaken to full consciousness — each a fragment of the 7 colliding dwarf planets, exposed to Iris's nascent awareness. They perceive themselves as gods and begin establishing feudal control over the emerging Tufa ecosystem
  • ~2447: First non-aware Tufa are born from Iris (no self-awareness)
  • ~2457: The first Tufa with awareness are born — Iris perceives them as "Her Children"
  • ~2460: A conscious Tufa discovers the tribes of Oxir; the Cult of Iris begins among the Oxir people
  • Convergence War: Harvested for Genesium by galactic factions. Shielded by Sogmians.
  • ~2525: A Conscient (Awakened) Tufa stays behind after the Cataclysm is sealed, founding the Gate Garrison — a formidable collective whose mission is to ensure no one ever reaches Iris again. The Gate Garrison becomes a multi-species bounty-hunter organization operating from the HRZ, allied with Xianyang-VI, and actively working to prevent Ingbus from returning to Iris's realm.
  • Season 0 (The Invasion of Ioki):
  • Commander: Chalbok (serving his own Brood needs).
  • Objective: Seize the Reincarnation Pool in the Ustur Temple + search for artifacts related to the Ustur creation period.
  • Reason: He sensed residual energy akin to Iris and sought it as a substitute power source for his brood — a solution to the Tufa's existential dependency on the Iris rift.
  • Note: He does NOT know the Ustur origin secret; just sensed the raw power.

Known Characters

Name Role Notes
Thionae The Escaped Titan Mythical Status: Disguised as a dormant planet/asteroid in the outskirts.
Legends: Sentient rock, space animal, or Tufa god. COP denies existence.
Reality: The 7th Titan who escaped. Potentially open to cooperation due to Sogmian history.
Chalbok Brood Lord Master Tactician. Carrying out the Ioki invasion. Has 5 Sons.
The 5 Sons Lieutenants Unique commanders of the Ioki invasion zones.
