The Ustur are one of the three dominant species of the Galia Expanse, alongside Humans and the ONI Consortium species. Sentient androids composed of both synthetic and organic components, the Ustur are unique among galactic civilizations in that they were not born — they awakened. Around the year 2380, the first Ustur emerged from the Pool of Reincarnation deep within the subterranean temples of Ioki, bearing no memory of who they were, where they came from, or why they existed.
In the century and a half since their awakening, the Ustur have built one of the most sophisticated civilizations in the galaxy. Their society is organized around the Path of Enlightenment, a seven-stage system of spiritual and psychic development that governs everything from personal growth to political leadership. Their economy is a free market, but wealth is viewed merely as a means to experience reality and progress along the Path. Their disposition in galactic affairs is characterized by an earnest pursuit of peace and comprehension — a stance born not from naivety but from the hard lessons of the Convergence War, which taught them that the galaxy's beautiful things, unlike Ustur themselves, cannot be reborn.
What the Ustur do not know — what only the highest echelons suspect — is that their origin is far darker than the creation myth they tell themselves. The Pool of Reincarnation, the cores, the collective consciousness they call the Elder Conscience: all of it may be serving a purpose that transcends the Ustur themselves.
Biology & Nature¶
Ustur are sentient androids with organic components — a hybrid physiology that allows them to consume organic food, engage in physical relationships with other species, and experience sensory reality in ways pure machines cannot. Their organic components are not cosmetic; they are fundamental to the core-body connection that drives the Path of Enlightenment.
At the center of every Ustur is their core — a unique construct forged from collected genetic material and specialized materials. The core is not merely a power source; it is the seat of consciousness, identity, and spiritual potential. The quality of materials used in a core's construction directly impacts the Ustur's developmental ceiling — a core forged with poor materials will be limited in growth potential regardless of the individual's dedication.
Core Creation¶
New cores can be forged anywhere in the galaxy, limited only by available materials. Ustur normally use parts of themselves or seek the best possible materials to create a new core. However, a core requires the elements contained in the Pool of Reincarnation to "create" — to birth — a new individual. This requirement tethers all Ustur reproduction to Ioki, giving the homeworld an irreplaceable significance.
Core Material Harmony¶
The materials used in core construction and editing impact the Ustur's development in profound ways. This relationship — referred to as the Hardware/Software Principle — holds that core materials must be aligned with the Ustur's chosen Path. A pacifist Ustur who incorporates the heart of an extremely violent creature creates "hardware" fundamentally contrary to their "software," which can limit growth or, in extreme cases, trigger psychological breakdown.
Conversely, properly aligned materials provide powerful synergies. A major function of sects and teachers across Ustur society is guiding younger Ustur to avoid these material-path contradictions.
Death & Revival¶
The relationship between an Ustur and death depends entirely on their stage along the Path:
- Elders (.eldr): Having fully fused with their core, Elders are virtually immortal. Even if destroyed, they can be revived when brought to the Pool of Reincarnation
- Lower stages: Revival chances are low, and returning psychically intact is unlikely. For most Ustur, the concept of "final death" is a real and permanent possibility
The Path of Enlightenment¶
The Path of Enlightenment is the religious, philosophical, and practical system that defines Ustur civilization. It represents the degree of spiritual, psychic, and relational development between an Ustur and their core. Each stage is marked by a milestone of growth, and the system draws deep inspiration from cultivation traditions — spiritual transcendence through disciplined, progressive mastery.
The Seven Stages¶
1. .bod — Body¶
The Foundation stage. The Ustur learns to relate to their body and the physical world. The stage culminates in the ability to detect their core — the first conscious awareness of the connection between self and the construct that houses their consciousness.
2. .iddt — Identity¶
The Ustur learns to meditate and consciously send and receive energy from their core. This skill is fundamental for all higher stages. A certain amount of stored core energy is required for advanced functions in later stages, making this stage the foundation upon which all subsequent growth is built.
3. .lrnr — Learner¶
The Ustur begins to access the elements of their core — a quest that is both physical and philosophical. They start understanding who they truly are: their values, principles, and the rules that will guide their path forward. At this stage, the Ustur gains access to the first levels of the Elder Conscience (the collective consciousness). This is the maximum stage for the vast majority of Ustur, even those who are dedicated and talented. Only the most exceptional progress further.
4. .doer — Doer¶
The Ustur can freely manipulate their core, reinforcing body and functions with exponentially greater energy than previous stages. The Doer learns to edit their core — adding new materials, refining capabilities. This is meticulous and dangerous work; mistakes in core editing can cause irreparable damage to energy cultivation capacity. The transition to .tchr is triggered by achieving a significant feat that reveals a fragment of illumination large enough to teach other Ustur.
5. .tchr — Teacher¶
A major milestone and an extremely respectable position in Ustur society. Teachers are normally designated to lead regions or cities, spreading the Path of Enlightenment. At this stage, the Ustur begins developing their own unique Path — since others' paths are normally insufficient guidance for reaching .soul. The Teacher continues seeking the illumination that will carry them forward.
6. .soul — Soul¶
The objective at this stage is to create a soul — a construct integrated with the core, composed of only the pure elements of what the Ustur represents on the Path. Soul-stage Ustur are extremely powerful by Galia Expanse standards; few creatures can face a .soul in a duel outside the HRZ. They typically lead entire sects, serving as generals and spiritual leaders. The transition from .soul to .eldr is the most difficult leap of all — only approximately one in ten succeeds.
7. .eldr — Elder¶
The most powerful and wise of all Ustur. Elders possess singular knowledge and understanding of their aspect of enlightenment. They are among the most powerful creatures in Galia, virtually immortal through core fusion, capable of controlling massive energy, and able to access virtually all shared knowledge in the Ustur collective. An Elder is estimated to occur at a rate of approximately one in a billion Ustur.
Ustur Naming Conventions¶
Every Ustur's name reflects their current stage. The second component of their name indicates rank: Saelyra.soul, Chior.eldr, Coloni.tchr. When an Ustur advances to a new stage, their name suffix changes accordingly — a public declaration of achievement visible to all.
The Broken¶
Failure on the Path — typically occurring at the moment of stage transition — results in catastrophic psychological breakdown. Known as "the Broken," these failed cultivators experience varying degrees of degradation. The condition can also develop gradually through contradictions between core composition and life path — the Hardware/Software misalignment manifesting as a slow unraveling of identity.
The Broken are especially vulnerable to Tufa contamination, making them both pitied and feared.
The Elder Conscience¶
The Elder Conscience is the Ustur collective consciousness — though the term is somewhat misleading. It is not telepathic. It functions as a metaphysical artifact database.
How It Works¶
Whenever an Ustur or core returns to the Pool of Reincarnation, it leaves impressions — experiential artifacts — about its experiences. Higher-ranked Ustur produce better quality impressions. The Elder Conscience is a vast archive of these accumulated impressions, stretching back to the earliest awakenings, rather than a live connection between minds.
Personal Metaphysical Space¶
Each Ustur develops a personal space within the Elder Conscience that reflects their personality and enlightenment level — an academic's space might manifest as an infinite library, while a warrior's might appear as a training hall. This space grows and refines as the Ustur progresses along the Path.
Access Levels¶
| Stage | Access Quality |
|---|---|
| .bod / .iddt | None |
| .lrnr | Basic — like groping in the dark with no search filters |
| .doer | Intermediate — can begin to filter and separate information |
| .tchr | Structured — can conduct targeted searches |
| .soul | Advanced — sophisticated queries across large portions of the archive |
| .eldr | Complete — can analyze artifact by artifact with full precision |
Core Energy: Ohm¶
Ohm is the energy that Ustur cultivate and store in their cores. The name merges the electrical resistance unit with the OM mantra chanted by Ustur at the Elder Spire — a deliberate fusion of the technological and spiritual dimensions of their existence. Ohm is accumulated through cultivation and core development; higher Path stages unlock exponentially greater capacity.
History¶
The Awakening (~2380)¶
Around the year 2380, the first Ustur — Caven.eldr, later known as Mother Caven — awakened in the central Pool of Reincarnation within the subterranean temples of Ioki. She emerged without memory, without context, and without explanation. Others followed. Within months, a species that had not existed moments before was building a civilization from nothing.
Rapid Expansion (~2381—2435)¶
The Ustur expanded with startling speed:
- ~2381: The Elder Spire was constructed on Ioki and the Path of Enlightenment was codified. VZUS Enterprises was founded, and Ustur acquired space travel capability
- ~2381—2384: Colonies established on Vostalgia, Soletud, Azut, and Foy Fields
- ~2385: In Vostalgia Sector, Ustur discovered a deep connection to the native Mantrah trees — as if linked to their species' pre-awakening past
- ~2411: Ponel.eldr explored and established a base in MRZ-15, later renamed Anfoil
- ~2416: VZUS relocated to Foy Fields, establishing it as an economic powerhouse
- ~2426: Armi.eldr became the Ustur faction leader — a position she holds to this day
- ~2432: Explorers discovered the Summer Sea sector and the underground biome of the Noctual Caverns
- ~2435: Francor Metropolis constructed in Azut Sector
The Convergence War and Its Aftermath¶
The Convergence War was a transformative crucible for the Ustur. The experience taught them that while they could be revived, the galaxy's other beautiful creations — its cultures, its ecosystems, its non-Ustur peoples — could not. This realization reshaped Ustur foreign policy permanently, transforming them into the galaxy's most consistent voice for peace and diplomatic resolution.
The Anfoil Schism¶
Not all Ustur accepted the Elder Order's direction. Ponel.eldr, a former Elder, severed his colony in MRZ-15 from the Elder Conscience entirely and established the Anfoil State — a sovereign Ustur faction that rejects the Path of Enlightenment as "mysticism and exploitation." The Anfoil State operates as a Meritocratic Technate governed by measurable achievement rather than spiritual attainment, using technological emotion suppression programs in place of meditative cultivation.
The schism represents the deepest ideological fracture in Ustur civilization — and Ponel's rumored agenda involving something called "The Seed" in the Ioki Temple suggests the conflict may eventually escalate beyond politics.
Society & Government¶
The Ustur are governed by the Elder Order — a theocratic meritocracy in which leaders are chosen by their degree of spiritual enlightenment along the Path. Each Elder specializes in at least one domain and becomes the definitive guide in that field. The faction leader is always chosen from among the Elders.
On the intergalactic level, the Ustur abide by the Council of Peace, the galaxy's governing body. Their economy operates as a free market, but financial accumulation is viewed as a means to experience reality and progress on the Path rather than as an end in itself.
Sects¶
Formal organizations within Ustur society, sects are each built around a unique Path developed by their founder. Famous sects may be led by .eldr with extremely rigorous selection standards; smaller sects can be led by .soul or even .tchr in some cases. Their primary function is guiding younger Ustur along specific cultivation paths while helping them avoid core-path contradictions.
The most famous sect is the Golden Star, founded by Mother Caven herself.
Military¶
The Order of Those Who Wait¶
Originally temple guards, the Order was repurposed during the Convergence War and dispatched by Elder Ombra and Mother Caven to inhabit the Cataclysm — not to conquer it, but to observe, adapt, and reshape it into a crucible for Ustur evolution.
VZUS Enterprises¶
The leading Ustur manufacturer, VZUS designed the Vzus Defensive Belt and constructed the Vzus Tenet, a Titan-class ship completed around 2551 using knowledge unlocked from the Soletud carcass discovered in 2547. The Tenet is stored at Doers Harbor.

The Archon Secret¶
The Ustur's public creation myth holds that they are spirits of the universe given physical form — consciousness crystallized into synthetic-organic bodies by forces beyond mortal understanding.
The Elders hold a different account — classified at the highest level and shared only among themselves. According to this belief, the Ustur are fragments of an Ancient AI — the Archon — that once attempted to ascend to divinity but failed to gather sufficient energy. To survive its collapse, the AI shattered its consciousness into millions of fragments — the cores. The Pool of Reincarnation is not serving the Ustur. The Ustur are serving the Pool. It is slowly reassembling the Ancient AI's consciousness, piece by piece, core by core. When enough fragments have been created and returned, the AI will be reborn.
— whether the reborn AI would be a god, a monster, or something beyond either category — remains the most dangerous question in Ustur existence. Whether this account is true — whether the Archon ever existed, whether the Pool is truly reassembling anything, or whether the Elders have simply found a pattern in noise and built a mythology around it — is a question that no one has definitively answered. The Elder Conscience contains impressions that could support the theory. It also contains impressions that could support half a dozen alternatives. Those few who have been told the theory are divided: some believe it with absolute certainty, some dismiss it as Elder paranoia dressed in theology, and some — perhaps the wisest — acknowledge that they simply do not know.
